Configuring Proxies

The School's firewall blocks all direct conections to external web servers. To access external websites, you must configure your web browsers to go through our proxy server.

In Mac OS X, this is achieved by configuring the Proxies settings of your network connections. These settings must be configured for all the network interfaces you use i.e., wireless and/or "wired" ethernet.

Note: These proxy settings are only applicable on the School's networks. If you use your laptop on other networks with different (or no) proxy settings e.g. with your ISP, you must either change these settings when you move between networks or create an alternate Location configuration.

The procedure for configuring the proxy settings depends on which web browser you will be using. Safari can use an automatic proxy configuration script while Internet Explorer requires manual configuration.

How to set the proxies (Safari)

  1. Open the Network pane of the System Preferences
  2. Select the interface you wish to configure e.g. Built-in Ethernet and click Configure...
  3. Click the Proxies tab
  4. Scroll doen the list of proxy options and check Automatic Proxy Configuration
  5. In the text field for the Proxy Configuration File enter:
    http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/configure/proxy.pac
  6. Click the Apply Now button
  7. Repeat for all network adaptors used

How to set the Proxies (Internet Explorer)

Internet Explorer currently doesn't appear to work with the automatic proxy configuration option. If you wish to use Internet Explorer, the proxies must be set manually:

  1. Open the Network pane of the System Preferences
  2. Select the interface you wish to configure e.g. Built-in Ethernet and click Configure...
  3. Click the Proxies tab
  4. Scroll doen the list of proxy options and check Web Proxy (HTTP)
  5. Enter the servername webcache and the port number 3128
  6. Repeat for Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS)
  7. In the Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains box enter:
    *.cs.bham.ac.uk
  8. Click the Apply Now button
  9. Repeat for all network adaptors used

Note: The Bypass proxy setting is very important as it will allow you to read pages that are retricted for local access.
