Home Computing

The support team can only provide limited assistance with home computing problems. However, there are resources available in the School that may be useful when trying to solve a problem at home.

Mailing Lists

There are a number of self-help mailing lists that users can join.

  • advice
  • pc-users
  • linux-users

There is also a home-computing newsgroup which is aimed specifically at providing advice for users working at home.

Problems with School Software CDs

Users are reminded that the the software packages available from the School CD/DVD sets (School CD, WhiteBox Linux, MSDN, etc...) may be significantly different from the versions installed on the machines within the School. There is no guarantee that any work created at home will run on the machines in the School. This is especially important to remember when working on coursework and final year projects which require demonstrations in the labs.
